Changing and warming up after a swim
Plan dry clothes and a sheltered place to change, and learn NHS advice for suspected hypothermia.
Plan what happens after the swim before you enter the water. Have dry clothing, a towel and a sheltered place to change ready. Change out of wet clothing and warm up gradually. Avoid driving if you feel unwell, confused or faint; get help.
When someone may be seriously cold
Hypothermia is a medical emergency. NHS guidance says to move the person to shelter, remove wet clothing, wrap them in dry layers and seek emergency medical help. Give a warm non-alcoholic drink only if they are fully awake. Do not use a hot bath or rub their limbs. Follow the NHS guidance linked below.
Cold exposure affects people differently. These are general pointers, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice.
