Swim wetsuits and warmth

Understand swim-wetsuit features, fit and warmth, and why kit cannot remove the risks of cold open water.

Swimwear is only one part of preparing for open water. Temperature, air conditions, activity, personal experience and the fit and construction of a suit all matter. There is no single wetsuit thickness that makes a swim safe for everyone.

Choose for the activity

A swimming wetsuit is designed for swimming movement; surf and general watersports suits may be cut and constructed differently. Compare manufacturer specifications and sizing charts for the exact model. A poor fit can restrict movement or let water flush through.

Plan beyond the suit

Cold water can affect breathing and movement even when wearing a wetsuit. Enter gradually, stay within your ability and have a plan for getting out and changing. The RNLI and Outdoor Swimming Society provide safety guidance. Kit suggestions are informational and are not a substitute for it.
