Swimming after heavy rain: why the advice says wait

Rainfall can carry pollution into waterways; check official notices and guidance for the nation and location.

Heavy rain can wash contaminants from land and urban areas into rivers, seas and bathing waters, and change river flows. Advice differs by nation and site. Check current official information and signs before deciding.

GOV.UK Swim Healthy describes how rain can affect water quality. SEPA advises against bathing during or one to two days after heavy rain at Scottish bathing waters; DAERA advises against bathing during heavy or prolonged rainfall and up to 48 hours after. Follow the advice for your place; do not apply one waiting period to all waterbodies. Many inland places are not designated or routinely monitored. Tarnbay cannot determine current water quality.
