Being seen in open water: bright hats, tow floats and lights

Visibility aids can help others spot you, but they cannot guarantee detection or replace a swim plan.

Bright swimwear and a bright hat can make a swimmer easier to see; a tow float may add visibility from some angles. None guarantees that boat users, shore users or other swimmers will notice you. Light, distance, waves and background all affect visibility.

Use visibility as one layer

Check local rules and boat traffic. Swim with others, tell someone your plan and use equipment according to its maker instructions. Do not enter if conditions or visibility exceed your ability. The RNLI recommends a bright hat and considering a tow float as part of wider preparation.
