Wetsuit thickness explained: matching neoprene to water temperature
Understand wetsuit thickness labels and compare manufacturer guidance without treating thickness as a safety guarantee.
Wetsuit thickness is usually stated in millimetres and may use two numbers for different panels. Meaning and construction are model-specific, so read the manufacturer’s description.
Compare the whole suit
Check stated thickness, intended activity, cut, seams, flexibility and size chart. Swimming and surf wetsuits may differ. A suit that is loose or restrictive may affect fit and movement. A thickness number cannot determine how long someone should swim or make conditions appropriate. Temperature, air, activity and individual response all matter. Enter gradually and plan an exit. Read the RNLI cold-water guidance and OSS risk guide.
