Swimming through the seasons
Plan around changing water and weather conditions, and use official information rather than assuming a season is predictable.
Water and air conditions vary by location and date. A calendar or recent experience cannot tell you the conditions at a particular swim. Check the forecast, tides where relevant, local notices and the official water-quality information for a designated bathing water.
Cold water needs respect year-round
Cold water can affect breathing and movement. Enter gradually, stay close to a planned exit and leave before you become too cold or tired. Clothing and equipment do not remove these risks. Do not use a fixed duration as a measure of safety.
Season dates for official bathing-water monitoring differ by nation. Check the authority for the place you plan to visit.
