Tow floats and visibility

Learn what tow floats and bright swimwear can and cannot do, and follow local water-safety advice.

A bright swim hat and a tow float can make a swimmer easier to see. A tow float is not a lifejacket and does not replace swimming within your ability, going with others or checking conditions. Choose equipment designed for the intended activity and follow its manufacturer instructions.

Visibility is one part of the plan

Check whether boats, currents, wind or local rules affect the place you have chosen. Secure the float as instructed and make sure it does not impede your movement. Do not assume that a visible swimmer will be seen by every water user.

For coastal emergencies call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Read our safety guidance before you go.
